Al heel wat jaren geleden kwam ik Özgür Hazar tegen in die iconische blueskroeg in Leuven waar hij me toen zijn album ‘Sad and Blue’ kwam te overhandigen. Enkele jaartjes en een pandemie later werd er een ‘Blues Syndicate’ aan de naam toegevoegd en deden ze zo maar meteen mee aan de ‘Belgian Blues Challenge’. Een wedstrijd waar ze als laureaat uit kwamen en zo een jaartje later België kwamen te vertegenwoordigen op ‘European Blues Challenge’ in het Poolse ‘Chrozów’.

Tot zover niets wereldschokkend al leverde het enkel concerten op festivals op. Vorig jaar stond hun versie van ‘Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate’ dan plotseling als ‘XL’ op de affiche bij de ‘Hnita Jazz Club’ te Heist-op-den-Berg met aan hun zijde enkel blazers uit onze Belgische jazzscene en net dit maakte het bijzonder om naar te luisteren. Het was toen ‘Blues’ met een plus en dit maakte het verleidelijk om ze te volgen.

Helaas bleek dit maar éénmalig te zijn maar de ‘plus’ bleef in hun blues doordat er gewerkt werkt aan een nieuw album. Dat album is er nu met als titel ‘Way Back Home’ met daarop 8 nieuwe nummers. Naast Özgür Hazar op vocals en gitaar bestaat het ‘Blues Syndicate’ vervolgens nog uit vocaal uithangbord Arianne Yaya, bassist Geert Zonderman, drummer Vincent Caers en master on the black & white keys Pieter Akkermans.

Toegeven ik heb ze dit jaar nog niet ‘Live’ kunnen beluisteren maar deze ‘Way Back Home’ doet toch het beste verhopen. Het werd een mix van blues, soulblues en zelfs een ‘Tin Pan Alley’ bluesje met ‘Can’t Missing You’. Openen doen ‘Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate’ met het easy laiback gebrachte ‘Counting The Reasons’. Dat je veel, en ook veel betere blues komt te beluistern hoor je wanneer ze met ‘Can’t Blame The Blues’ in doorwinterde Robert Cray grooves komen te brengen.

Het volgende soul aanvoelende en titeltrack ‘Way Back Home’ blijft een beetje ingetogen waarna ze het al swingend verder zetten met een duet op ‘Downtown Philly’. Met ‘Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean’ kruipt Arianne een beetje in de huid van een Rhythm ‘n Blues legende Ruth Brown, die het nummer in 1958 de charts in kwam te zingen. ‘Holy Man’ brengt ons dat het steverige werk uit de ‘Blue and Sad’ periode alvorens af te sluiten met het front porch bluesje ‘Footsteps’.

Born in Istanbul in 1976, Özgür Hazar is a blues/rock guitarist living in Leuven, Belgium, who recently released his second album. From 2006 to 2008 he played in various bands in Philadelphia, USA. He then returned to Istanbul, where he played in the clubs with his band. Since March 2018, Özgür has been living in Leuven. In September 2019 his first single was released, followed in 2020 by the well-received debut CD “Sad And Blue”. In 2022 he won the Belgian Blues Challenge, which allowed him to represent Belgium at the European Blues Challenge.

The band has since been renamed Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate and recently released the album “Way Back Home”. In addition to namesake Hazar, the band consists of singer Arianne Musschoot (mentioned on the website as Arianne Yaya), keyboard player Pieter Akkermans, bassist Geert Zonderman and drummer Vincent Caers. The album contains seven original songs, two of which were co-written by several members of the band. The only cover is “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”, which we know from Ruth Brown and several others. The album starts off strong with the raw rocking “Counting The Reasons”, which is followed by the somewhat quieter “Can’t Blame The Blues”. The title track “Way Back Home” sounds subdued and stands out because of the jazzy guitar work. The swinging “Downtown Philly” is a duet between Arianne and Özgür. This is followed by the slow blues “Can’t Stop Missing You” and the aforementioned cover “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”. In the blues rock “Holy Man” Özgür tears through on his guitar again. The closer is the intimate, acoustically played “Foodsteps”.

With the new album, Özgür Hazar has continued the path he started with his debut “Sad And Blue”. Once again, we have a fine album with a wonderful mix of blues and rock songs. An absolute must.

Gitarist-zanger Özgür Hazar werd in Istanbul, Turkije, geboren en verhuisde in 2018 naar het Belgische Leuven. Daarna verbleef hij tussen 2004 en 2006 ook nog in Philadelphia waarna hij weer naar België terugkeerde.

Daar richtte hij de band Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate op, die naast Özgür bestaat uit Arianne Yaya (zang), Pieter Akkermans (Keyboards), Geert Zonderman (bas) en Vincent Caers (drums).

Deze band won in 2022 de Belgian Blues Challenge. Hun nieuwe album ‘Way Back Home’ laat horen waarom.

Een album, dat gevuld is met heerlijke bluesy nummers. De ene keer intieme soulblues en de andere keer rauwe schurende bluesrock.

Counting The Reasons wordt geopend met Özgür’s schrapende gitaarriffs waarna het nummer loom sluipende verder gaat. Özgür laat zijn gitaar hier gemeen bijten. Can’t Blame The Blues is daarna een intiem deinend soulbluesnummer met lichte “The Thrill Is Gone” trekjes. Warm groovend met een belangrijke rol voor het warme soulorgel van Pieter Akkermans.

Het titelnummer, Way Back Home, is een lui nummer met jazzy gitaarwerk en intieme zang van Arianne Yaya. In de losjes swingende shuffle Downtown Philly gaat Özgür vocaal in duet met Arianne. Can’t Stop Missing You is vervolgens een slowblues in de beste “Need Your Love So Bad” traditie met Özgür’s weemoedig huilende gitaar.

Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean is een losjes swingende cover van het Ruth Brown nummer met felle zang van Arianne. In het lomp dreunende Holy Man gaat de band op de bluesrock toer met de vlammende gitaar van Özgür in de hoofdrol.

Footsteps sluit het album af op een intiem schuifelende wijze.

Dit heerlijke album bewijst de kwaliteiten van de Turks/Belgische band Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate.

De in Istanbul geboren Özgür Hazar is een blues/rock gitarist en singer-songwriter. Van 2006 tot 2008 speelde hij in diverse bands in Philadelphia. Daarna keerde hij terug naar Istanbul, waar hij in clubs met zijn band optrad, waarna hij zich in 2018 in Leuven vestigde. In het voorbije jaar werkte hij aan zijn debuutalbum, waarvoor hij de promo single “Sad and Blue” uitbracht, die ook verscheen op het BRR (Broadcasting Radio Recordings) label. Hazar is op gitaar beïnvloed door de “groten” die hem vooraf gingen als BB King, SR Vaughan en Eric Clapton.

Op zijn debuut ‘Sad and Blue’ wordt Özgür Hazar (zang, gitaar) gebackt door de bassisten Sitki Sencer Ozbay (zes nummers) & Murat Bolat (twee nummers), drummer Jason M en de toetsenisten Julia Driessen (Hammondorgel, piano) & Yavuz Daridere (Hammondorgel, Rhodes). De zang wordt van Hazar in de zwoele opener “I’m on Fire” overgenomen door Raye Cole (een singer-songwriter uit East St. Louis, IL), op het swingende “Baby Blue” op crooner-achtige wijze door de Bulgaar Konstantin Tomov, op het soulvolle “Can’t Stop Missing You” erg knap door Nikki N. en, op het Josh Smithnummer “That Ain’t Me” door Gorkem Bolaca. De band staat er als een huis en Hazar is -met zijn snedige gitaarrifs- een prima gitarist, die qua composities en stijl duidelijk eigen keuzes maakt. Zijn eigen composities variëren van uptempo, swingend, bluesy en rustige ballades. Ze zijn verpakt in Latino-achtige bluesy rock als “Let Me Be Your Man”, in een shuffle als “Sweet Angel”, in rap toestanden als “Fuzz Funk” en, in slow blues à la lettre als de afsluiter “Fade Away”.

The band is rock solid and Hazar is a great guitarist, who is clearly influenced by Eric Clapton, BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name a few. In addition, his own contribution is large enough to call him a flat copyist. The compositions and execution consist of several layers and have sufficient depth to guard against this. Songs that deserve an extra mention are the title track ‘Sad And Blue’ and the ballad ‘Can’t Stop Missing You’ sung by Nikki N.. In short, a great debut album. (8/10) (own management)

Ozgur Hazar was born in 1976, guitarist and singer from Istanbul but residing in Belgium. Influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, BB King, Matt Schofield and other Blues legends. He lived in the USA – Philadelphia between 2004 – 2006 and played with several bands in clubs. Played many concerts and clubs in Istanbul with his band. In March 2018, Özgür moved to Leuven. The lead single ‘Sad and Blue’ was included in BRR album sampler 11th edition along with great artists such as Allman Betts Band, Samantha Fish, Laurence Jones Band, Danny Bryant, Ken Valdez, Savoy Brown and others.

Özgür Hazar will release his rock album ‘Sad And Blue’ in 2020. The nine-track album features emotional instrumentation, narrative lyricism, and anthemic vocal performances by Özgür Hazar and many others. ‘Sad And Blue’ exudes a narrative, inspiring atmosphere that will nourish the soul. The album undoubtedly has the potential to influence the listener as it features a unique style that gives the overall song an identity. From ‘Sweet Angel’ to ‘Fuzz Funk’, the album has it all to influence the listener.

The powerful guitar riffs, stirring instrumentation, the lyrical depth and the overall flow of the album take the listener on a musical journey. ‘Sad And Blue’ has the ability to resonate with any blues lover as it has every element to be catchy, memorable and impressive. Özgür Hazar will tour in January 2020 and promote the album in Belgium and the Netherlands
